About the Work-Study Program

Work-study is funded through two related programs. Both work the same way for students — the difference is where the funding comes from.

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Provides employment opportunities so an eligible student can earn funds to pay for educational expenses, funded through the federal government.

Colorado Work-Study (CWS)

Provides the same kind of employment opportunity for eligible students, funded through the State of Colorado.

$9,228

Maximum earnings per two-semester college year

20 hrs

Per week while classes are in session

28 hrs

Per week during official college breaks

Eligibility for both programs is based on demonstrated financial need, determined through your FAFSA, and pay complies with the Federal Minimum Wage Law. Job placements are based on individual skills, work experience, course of study, and the date your financial aid application was received. Work-study earnings are meant to help offset your college expenses.

Work-Study Guidelines

Approval Comes First

You must be approved for work-study by the Financial Aid Department before HR can process your employment.

Weekly Hour Limit

Students may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, and up to 28 hours per week during official college breaks, up to the total amount awarded on your work-study card. For work-study purposes, the week begins on Sunday.

Stay Enrolled Full-Time

You must remain a full-time student to keep your work-study position. Dropping below full-time ends your employment immediately.

No Overlap with Class Hours

Work-study hours must be scheduled outside of your class times. You cannot work during your scheduled classes. Supervisors and students share responsibility for staying within awarded hours.
