Tony Boone Biography


Tony Boone is a pioneer in the evolution and art of planning and creating sustainable, machine-built trails for mountain bikers, hikers, runners and equestrians. His accomplishments include: the first official mountain bike patrol in Colorado in 1989, training eight International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Trail Care Crews (1997-2011), inspiring and conducting mechanized training for the IMBA Trail Solutions (2001), and contributing to three IMBA books: Trail Solutions: IMBA’s Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack, Managing Mountain Bikes: IMBA’s Guide to Providing Great Riding and Bike Parks: IMBA’s Guide to New School Trails.

Tony has taught over 3,000 students worldwide in the art of sustainable trail design, construction, and management.

TMC 101 - Introduction to Natural Surface Trails and Recreation Management

Introduces sustainable trail concepts, including ways trails impact the landscape and ecology, land management and recreation, basic geography and maps, types of trails and trail users, basic sustainability concepts, and implementation of a new trail project.
APRIL 19-23, 2021
TMC103 – Introduction to Trail Maintenance

To register call Donna Haddow at 719-846-5724.
Introduces sustainable trail maintenance practices including evaluation of trail condition, coordinating with land managers; tool selection, use and maintenance, and personal and crew safety considerations. Developing maintenance plans and basic trail maintenance techniques are also covered in this course.

TMC110 – Planning Sustainable Trails I

Covers sustainable trail planning considerations, including route planning, types of trails, an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and map reading, mathematical calculations, accessibility requirements, and signage. The course also explores trail building opportunities and design constraints, and environmental impact considerations.

TMC120 – Designing Sustainable Trails I

Explores sustainable trail design considerations. Topics include safety and risk management, sustainability, control points, user experience, slopes, water control, environmental impact, basic surveying techniques, trail types, and trail standards and guidelines.

Builds on sustainable trail building concepts including safety, removal of obstacles, water control elements, elevation change elements, control points, trail hardening, chainsaw safety, and risk management.

October 11-15, 2021
Trails in Challenging Terrain (TMC 150)

Examines the numerous challenges to planning, designing and building trails in challenging terrain and soils, extreme climates, significant elevation changes, and methods to protect significant natural/cultural resources.

Trail Operations and Maintenance Planning (TMC 160)
