Why Trail Building
Want Classes in the Great Outdoors?
As Colorado's first community college, Trinidad State has led the way in innovative programs targeting skills that are in workplace demand. This program follows in that tradition. There is a tremendous interest in trails of all kinds around the world, which has resulted in a strong demand for knowledgeable professionals in the trail building industry.
Trail development as a career is taking off more than ever as environmentally sound practices and sustainable development come to the forefront in light of ecological and climate concerns, but that's just part of the appeal. For those who love the outdoors, having some of the most beautiful natural landscapes as a working environment ranks very high — as does building something lasting while ensuring trails stay sustainable and eco-friendly for generations to come. The skill set students gain in building and maintaining trails is an advantage they can carry wherever they go in their recreation and trail-building careers.

How the Program Works
Short-term workshops, real credentials
Starting in 2025, the program shifted to short-term, trail-related workshops offered through continuing education — not for college credit. Students receive a certificate of completion and CEUs (continuing education units) for professional development for each course they take. This model lets Trinidad State bring in trail trainers from around the world for focused, short-term learning opportunities.
Workshops are scheduled using the Trail Skills Project (PDF) as a guide.
